If We Build It, the Alpacas will Come - Our Farm Construction Timeline We’re breaking ground this year on our job training alpaca farm for teens and young adults on the autism spectrum! Last year (2019), TLS middle school and high school students created the first L4L Farm student garden on TLS North East grounds as part of their transition curriculum.
Our next step is to build the barn, gift shop and workspace, gardens, greenhouse and pastures for our job training farm. We’re seeking private, corporate and foundation funding and in-kind materials and service donations from local businesses to build our farm - let us know if you want to get involved! This spring and summer (2020), we started with soil testing, septic system design, a detailed barn plan and a site map. We're mapping the current site grading and developing a grading plan that includes an elevated dirt pad for our barn and shop, a gravel driveway and parking lot and field drainage with swales and drain tile. We hope to do site excavation to regrade the site for drainage -- alpacas need dry feet! -- and put in the gravel driveway in late 2020. The Spring of 2021 we will hopefully be raising the alpaca barn and workspace/gift shop! The rest of 2021 we’ll install field drainage and fencing and seed the pastures. In 2022 we'll complete the barn and shop plumbing, septic, well, wiring and finishes. We plan to get our alpacas and launch our full job training program in 2023! We’ll put in our big organic garden and raise an unheated hoophouse for garden season extension once the field drainage is fully installed and construction allows for safe access to the garden areas of the site. Our Farm gardens and a small unheated hoophouse will continue to expand in the meantime on the school side of the property, and students will sell Farm produce and flowers at a local farmer’s market and on-site farm stand as part of TLS Transition Summer Camps 2021 - 2022. Keep in touch and reach out to us if you want to get involved!

I like that this post mentioned that it is important to have our pipes maintained and prepared during winter to ensure it is well maintained. It makes sense as in doing so, it ensures that our farm will be well maintained. I will definitely keep this information in mind when I look to have my pipes prepared for winter.

I have a big organic garden where I grow a variety of veggies and herbs sustainably. I also use an unheated hoophouse to extend the growing season and protect my plants from harsh weather.
